What Is the Wow! Signal?
The Wow! Signal was a powerful radio burst detected in 1977 by astronomer Jerry R. Ehman while working at the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio. The signal, originating from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, was so strong that Ehman famously circled it on the printout and wrote 'Wow!' in the margin.
The Characteristics That Make It Unique
The signal was narrowband, lasting 72 seconds, and was approximately 30 times stronger than background noise. Its frequency, 1420 MHz, is significant because it’s the frequency of the hydrogen line—the natural emission frequency of hydrogen atoms. This makes it a prime candidate for discussions of potential extraterrestrial communication.
Possible Explanations: Natural or Artificial?
Theories range from natural cosmic phenomena to intentional alien signals. Some scientists suggest it could have been caused by a passing comet, while others speculate it may have been a technological signature from another civilization.
The Search for Answers
Despite extensive follow-up observations, the signal has never been detected again. This lack of repetition has left astronomers baffled, as many natural and artificial phenomena are more recurrent. The Wow! Signal remains one of the greatest mysteries of radio astronomy.
